by Erika Jamis on March 15, 2010

Big Bear Lake is a small city in the majestic Southern California mountains. Other cities line the road up the hill to the Big Bear Valley such as Crestline, Running Springs and Lake Arrowhead.

Around the lake are many different sub-cities. These are named Boulder Bay, Big Bear Lake, Moonridge, Big Bear City, Sugarloaf, Erwin Lake, Lake Williams, Baldwin Lake and Fawnskin.

Boulder Bay is a secluded area with its own public shore and beautiful mountain surroundings. Big Bear Lake the location of Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski resorts and the famous Village area. Moonridge is a high mountain forested area with many beautiful cabin homes.

Big Bear City is a very populated town of residents on your way west to Big Bear Lake. Sugarloaf is home to many folks as well. It’s structures and streets are very compact. Erwin Lake is the wilderness home area at the end of Big Bear Lake. Lake Williams and Baldwin Lake are where the cowboys live by their own means away from plumbing and other wimpy amenities. Finally, Fawnskin is a cute little town on the lake that you might just miss if you blink.

Tourism in Big Bear Lake doesn’t always focus on the minute aspects of what this area has to offer. But this town has several schools, restaurants and businesses like any other major city elsewhere.

Traveling away from the main roads might offer you an exciting foray into quaint and cozy residential areas. Just be careful not to meander into the wilderness. Big Bear Lake is special, secret getaway for many to be entertained and to build everlasting memories.

Sure, most people come to Big Bear Lake for the slopes and the lake, but you may be surprised what other attractions you may enjoy up here in the mountains. Will Antarctica Experience a Halt to Exploration?

by Ava Evans on March 15, 2010

A hundred years ago or so, a whaling ship known as the Antarctic came to a halt off the volcanic, wind-battered coast and sent one of their longboats through the through the rough ocean of the Ross Sea to reach the shore. On January 24, 1895, Captain Leonard Kristensen and the landing party of the “Antarctic” left the first trace of human kind on the frozen continent in their quest to slaughter whales in these, as yet, unclaimed waters.

In other words, Antarctica was first christened in the search of whales and the discovery of numerous other money producing animals. The machinery used in the Industrial Revolution required greasing, therefore scores of whales and penguins were slaughtered for their oil, along with millions of seals, who were killed in order for their fur to be harvested. It was on Macquarie Island that countless penguins were rounded up and forced up planks that lead into large pots of boiling oil so that they would fall in and add their own oil to the mix.

It took 100 years, but mankind has thankfully become much wiser and finally set priorities in the right direction. Rather than exploiting the amazing Frozen Continent for money, Antarctica is now designated as a nature preserve and used only for scientific research. There’s even talks of establishing a park where people from all over the world can visit. Scientists are discovering incredible new things in Antarctica, including pollutants and threats to our ozone, and new information about the greenhouse effect. Considering how brief a time we have inhabited our planet, the discoveries that we have made in Antarctica since its discover are truly remarkable. The degree of exploration was limited to a small fraction of coastline and islands, and included only a few routes to the South Pole up until the 1957-1958 International Geophysical Year.

The presence of people in Antarctica has been a wild story; a story of ferocious tenacity, nationalist, idealism, and unrestrained butchery of nature, with the occasional scientific discovery peppered in for good measure. The whaling industry experienced a boom during World War I because of the oil needed to make glycerin for artillery shells. After World War II began, Americans and the Soviets both needed to produce extra-fine oil for their jet engines. So, the Soviets and the Americans both began hunting sperm whales. Prior to the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958, Antarctica was identified as the “Terra Incognita,” by medieval mapmakers.

It is important to note that even the first person to be born in Antarctica, who is still not an adult, was born here for the sake of patriotic affectation. As a matter of fact, Emilio Marcus Palmer was born at Argentina’s Esperanza Base in 1978, where his mother was brought for the sole purpose of emphasizing Argentina’s claim to this area of Antarctic territory.

To put this into perspective, this was nine years after the prodigious event when American astronauts planted their nation’s flag to symbolize American pre-eminence. Before that, the most amazing exploit that man had known was when Roald Amundsen made his dash to the South Pole in 1911 in honor of his king – King Haakon VII of Norway. Although Robert F. Scott and his team also made that trip for the British, they spent a great deal more time on their voyage so that they could collect rock and fossil samples – the weight of which only slowed them down further.

After discovering that despite all their hard work, Amundsen had beaten them to the Pole by an entire month, Scott’s party perished in Antarctica due to a combination of bad luck, the pain of hauling massive amounts of rock, and poor diet. This made them the first team of martyrs for the cause of science in Antarctica. America made its claim on the South Pole when Richard Byrd flew over it in 1929 in a Ford Trimotor. The battle to claim the continent continued when the Soviets attempted to justify their interests when the Russian Admiral Thaddeus Bellingshausen passed the Antarctic Peninsula during his voyage in 1821.

The Lightweight Travel Trailer Becomes a Friend to Environmentalists

by Jim Tolar on March 15, 2010

With the environment still a hot topic for conservationists, lightweight travel trailers have become a great means of travel for those who want to conserve money and gas while still getting out to explore the world. While the world is scaling back on the size of cars and living space, they are also taking a closer look at how to conserve while traveling.

Lightweight travel trailers are intended to be small, compact and carry the most basic of essentials. Generally six to sixteen feet long, these trailers offer a warm dry place to sleep and eat while not taking up a lot of storage space and hitching onto mid-size cars for added fuel economy. Tear drop campers and pop up campers both fall into the category of lightweight travel trailer.

Most lightweight travel trailers are suited for a maximum of four people while others were created for soloists, couples or those with pets. Whether you prefer a shower and kitchen, or just a bed to sleep in, there’s a model that fits your needs.

The newest models of lightweight travel trailers can be pulled by a mid-sized vehicle. In the past you needed to own an SUV or pick-up truck in order to own any sort of trailer. As well, their new design makes them more aerodynamic, so wind friction doesn’t eat into fuel costs.

Lightweight travel trailers don’t always look like the traditional image of an RV. Pop-up campers are closer cousins to tents than RVs. They fold away for storage but pop-up to offer cooking space, and a refreshing shower after a long sticky day playing in the outdoors.

Teardrop campers are perfect for simplicity. You can throw in your gear and have a ready-made bed no matter where you are. If you spend months at a time on the road between places, this is a great way to get around. Exhaustion accounts for poor reflex time and can lead to accidents. Having a place to sleep is a safe move that won’t cost you a ton in hotel bills.

GoRVing has enlisted third parties to study the environmental effects of RV travel vs. regular air and hotel travel. The results are that RVing can save up to as much as 60% off regular travel. Those who want to upgrade their lightweight travel trailer to cater to the environment can use solar panels and recycle water for additional savings. Outfitting the beds with bamboo sheets also helps.

People who love to get out on the road but aren’t fans of bugs and unexpected storms will love these lightweight travel trailers. Snuggle down and listen to the wind pass by or the rain fall down. Because lightweight travel trailers offer so much convenience at low prices, they have become a favorite of people who love to get outdoors and explore. People who buy lightweight travel trailers tend to be fit and active.

The latest RV shows found an increased interest in lightweight travel trailers. There’s a new generation of people becoming interested in RVs and the companies that cater towards the environmentally friendly crowd are seeing a spike in sales.

Lightweight travel trailers are here to stay. Whether you buy new or used, the benefits they offer will only enhance any trip you take.

Class B RVs Are a Car and a Holiday Packed Into One Vehicle

by Jim Tolar on March 15, 2010

How did Class B RVs get their name? We don’t know because there’s nothing about them that deserves a ‘B’ ranking. Set up as a luxury van, Class B RVs are as easy to drive around town as they are on the highway. They can be parked more easily off back-country roads than a Class A RV and still offer the conveniences of sleeping, cooking and relaxing in the vehicle.

Class B RVs are ready to hit the road today. All you have to do is a little grocery shopping, throw in a bag or two and you’re on your way to an adventure. These vehicles are vans that have been expanded to what amounts to a hotel suite. They have the features of a regular car, but the extension allows for two people to live comfortably on the road headed to any destination. More deluxe models have room for four, which is perfect for families.

You won’t find most other RVs bringing in 18mpg. Being one unit as opposed to tow-along RVs that create a lot of wind friction, the aerodynamic build of these vehicles helps save fuel on long trips. Clearly, Class B RVs are designed to hit the road and spend more time playing than working, but they also maneuver easily around town when you do need to work to pay a few bills.

When traveling with more than one person, everyone is generally on a different schedule for restroom stops and hunger pangs. All of this is solved with the built in bathroom and kitchen. Kids won’t be begging for a restroom stop five minutes after you’ve pulled out of the restaurant. It cuts travel time down and keeps everyone happy.

Class B RVs measure 16-21 feet from bumper to bumper. Their size makes them easy to park in the busiest streets and easy to navigate through jam-packed events. They also work well when you’re heading to baseball and football games, concerts or a beachside vacation.

Their pricing is one of their more attractive features. On the low end, they cost less than a luxury car yet give you instant vacations on wheels. $30,000 is an entry level price on Class B RVs while the more expensive models can run over $65,000. Now is also a great time to look for Class B RVs offered through consignment dealers. With people downsizing, deals can be found everywhere.

One of the benefits of owning an RV is that it meets the requirements for a second home tax break. Most tax programs are set up to help you with this, as are accountants and tax accounting specialists. Financing deals allow you to spread out payments over 15 years, so the Class B RV becomes no bigger an investment than a luxury car.

Because the Class B RV is more like a van than an RV, expect ease when driving. You’ll have power steering and cruise control to make life a little easier, not to mention a place to stretch out when long nights on the road become exhausting.

Class B RVs are top of the line when you’re looking for a vehicle that incorporates the ease of driving a van with the amenities of a larger RV. What more do you need than a place to cook, sleep and relax? The beauty of Class B RVs is they allow you to hit the road without a second thought, sleep where you want and wake up to some of the most incredible scenery in the world.

Plan Your Next Family Cruise Ship Vacation

by Arnold Fienstein on March 15, 2010

When you think about preparing for your cruise vacation you probably picture packing a swimsuit and sandals. However there are a few things that are often overlooked that can make a huge difference. f your trip takes you outside the country ensure your passport is valid. As soon as you receive your cruise documents make your reservations for on-board amenities and shore excursions. Assess your available credit and make sure you have plenty of cash. These small steps can greatly enhance your cruise vacation enjoyment.

Depending on where your cruise vacation takes you it is a good idea to get or renew your passport. Recent changes in US law mean that a passport is required to reenter the States from Mexico and the Caribbean. If you already have a passport check the expiration date and make sure it has blank pages. You don’t want to be on the high seas when you realize that it expired a month before or worse during your trip.

If you don’t have one get one as soon as possible and pay the extra money to expedite the process. Once you receive your new passport make several copies of it. If it is lost or stolen you will be very glad you took this step. Give copies to your emergency contact back in the states and put one in your suitcase.

Your company will send your documents for your cruise vacation a month or so before embarkation. They contain important information about ship activities and amenities as well as shore excursions. Many cruise lines allow you to make reservations online via their websites. While you could wait until you board your cruise ship to make these arrangements you’ll likely find a long line and inconvenient times available. Booking ahead allows you to begin enjoying yourself the minute you step on board knowing that you’ve got it all taken care of.

A cruise vacation is a great way to celebrate a milestone such as a honeymoon birthday or anniversary. Check with your cruise line to see what kinds of special packages are available. You should check as soon as possible so that they have plenty of time to make arrangements. Those who wait until they are at sea to request twelve dozen orange roses will likely be disappointed.

A few months before your cruise vacation take a look at your amount of available credit. You’ll want to know as soon as possible if you must open another card pay down your balance or move money around. Upon check in you can expect a hold on your credit card for incidentals during your trip. Liners could set holds ranging $50-200 per day on your card.

It is a great idea to call ahead and find out your cruise line’s policy. This is especially important if you plan to stay in a hotel or rent a car since there will be multiple holds on your credit card. Even though your charges are adjusted to reflect the money you actually spent it can take several days for it all to catch up. You don’t want to find out that your card is declined during your trip because of holds.

You’ll want to make sure you bring some cash on your cruise vacation as well. Your credit card will get a good workout but there are times when you’ll need cash. Traveler’s checks are not taken as often as they used to because of the high rate of fraud. Most ships have ATMs but you can count on a high fee and they have been known to run empty. You’ll be very glad you have some hard cash to make purchases from street vendors and smaller merchants on shore. Also cash tips are a great way to recognize all the great service from your cruise ship staff. Packing some cash is an easy way to avoid inconvenience on your dream vacation.

You don’t need to have a Type A personality to get organized for your cruise vacation. A little preparation will ensure that you are prepared to fully enjoy every minute of your vacation. Check your passport make your reservations and assess your credit and cash situation. These small but important steps will pay off in cruise vacation enjoyment. Of course pack your swimsuit and sandals and enjoy your trip!

Before you book your next cruise, you should be aware of important cruise travel considerations so that you ensure your cruise is fun and memorable. Below is a helpful guide to cruise ship travel:

1. The best time to take a cruise depends on the cruise travel destinations. For instance, the summer months are the best time to take an Alaskan Cruise and European Cruise. You can consult with your local travel agent about any last minute sell-offs being offered during the off-season.

2. If you are looking to get a great deal on a cruise, book a vacation during the ’shoulder season.’ This is the period right between the destination’s low and high seasons. For instance, the cheapest time to go on an Alaskan cruise is May. As well, November/December is a great time to for a Caribbean Cruise. October and April is a good time for a Mediterranean cruise. You can take advantage of last minute deals, special promotions, and special off-season prices. As well, you can often get a special discounted cruise vacation package.

4. Because there are only a few cruise ports, you may have to get a cheap flight to the cruise port. You can often get a combo “fly-cruise” package. It is important to compare prices to see if you can get a better deal by purchasing the ticket independently. The “fly-cruise” price will usually include transfers between the ship and the airport, which can increase the price. There are a number of cheap airline websites where you can find a great deal. You may want to book your flights online (or offline) a day before departure in case there are flight delays.

It can be difficult planning a vacation cruise, especially if it is your first time. It is important to know where you want to go and the type of cruise you want to take before you book. Fortunately, there are many ways to book your dream cruise while getting a great price. It just takes a little knowledge and research, and before you know it, you will be on the open water having the time of your life.

Advice For The Perfect Babymoon Vacation

by Adriana Noton on March 15, 2010

Although having baby is an exciting and emotional time in a couple’s life, it also means that there will be some major life changes. For instance, you and your partner will no longer be living as a couple that has the freedom to get up and go at a moments notice. Basically, you will be responsible for a precious new life. Before baby makes three, couples will often take one last vacation to relax and enjoy the last moments alone. When you are planning the perfect babymoon vacation, there are a number of things you can do to make your time together relaxing, enjoyable and memorable.

1. There is a certain point in the pregnancy when a woman should not travel due to the risk of premature labor. It is recommended that a pregnant woman not fly before 12 weeks. The best time for an expectant mother to travel is during the second trimester, weeks 14 to 27. During this period, morning sickness should have subsided. While on the plane, make sure you stretch your legs every hour to prevent blood clots. As well, make sure you get a comfortable seat with plenty of leg room.

2. When planning where to travel when pregnant, it is important to choose a flight destination where you will be comfortable. Traveling to a destination that is known for extreme heat may not be a good choice as the heat can cause dehydration and nausea. The Caribbean and Florida are popular winter destinations. Canada is a great place to travel as the climate is very temperate. You will also want to travel to places that have quality healthy food with comfortable hotels. As well, you should familiarize yourself with the location of the local hospitals and physician clinics.

3. Vacationing while pregnant means you have to choose the appropriate clothing. Clothing should be loose fitting and the fabric soft on the skin. Elastic waistlines are a good choice. You should also make sure your clothing is appropriate for the climate. You do not want to be too cold or so hot that you are constantly perspiring.

4. While at your destination, you have to make sure you are eating and drinking healthy. You should consider drinking only bottled water. As well, eat at fine restaurants that have an excellent rating. Eat foods that are healthy for you and the baby. You can even bring your own healthy snacks.

5. Make sure you have had a doctor’s health check up before you leave. If you are staying at a sunny destination, wear lots of sunscreen. Bring your vitamins, medicine, and any medical documentation. As well, make sure you get plenty of rest before and during the vacation.

Having a baby means life as a couple will soon be changing to baby makes three. The babymoon vacation is a great time to enjoy the last moments of peace and quiet. When you make the proper travel preparations take your pregnancy into consideration and you will have a fun, healthy, diaper-free unforgettable vacation.
