What Is The Importance Of International Program For Students?

by Adriana Noton on March 11, 2010

In high school, students are given opportunities that will shape who they are and help them to become the very best. One of those programs is the international program for students. This is a program that allows high school aged kids to go to another country and attend school for a semester. While some students want to do this, many parents want to know of the importance of international program for students. Let us help you to understand.

One of the first things that high school students gain from this sort of experience is that they are able to look at the place in which they live and find why they love it so much. They get to see how other places differ. This way they recognize all the great things they have.

One of the major things they will learn first hand is the governmental systems. Each government system is different. Some are different for the good. Others are different for the worse. They can see these and they also get to see how these governments affect the people in which they govern.

They get to see the differences in the school system. While some school systems are great, there are some that are really not on top of the game. They do not benefit those students who have to learn with this system. They get to see how those students thrive and survive.

International students at an independent high school are immersed with a new culture. They learn to speak as the natives speak. They go to different events that they might or might not know much about. They will be a part of this culture and are expected to assimilate as best as possible. This can be a great challenge, but as they learn to adjust they get to have an open mind about things.

They will learn to accept other cultures. This is something that we don’t teach our children enough of. They are taught to see the negatives in people and not the positives. With doing this program at a preparatory school, they have a chance in which they can see both. Not every society is bad. You can learn a few things from other cultures and this is how they can learn to do so.

They are on their own so they have to keep their head above water. They have a host family, but the host family is not there to raise them. They are there to give them food and shelter and act as the person that they go to when it comes to legal matters and such, but they are put into this situation where they have to learn everything and make it on their own.

Above all, they get to see and go someplace which many people miss the chance on. They are put in a one on one learning situation. They will learn how to do things differently. They will interact with people that they never thought they would have the chance to interact with. That is what this program is all about. It’s giving student the opportunity to stand up for their country, but to learn from another.

Attending the best Toronto private schools is greatly beneficial to students later in life, especially regarding prospective scholarships. Alternatively, your education may also be enriched through an efficient and practical Toronto prep school.

College Party Ideas – 6 Awesome Ideas

by Damian Jackson on October 28, 2009

We only go to college to party right? Lets be honest about it. Instead of throwing an every day party like you’ve always been to before, you should be ramping it up with a theme party to be remembered for. Attempt some of our college theme party ideas.

1. Hollywood – A Hollywood theme party can be further broken into smaller themes. A favourite movie, an actor or perhaps an oscar night? Your friends will appreciate the opportunity to dress up as glamorous as possible and this theme is effortless to throw as many of the props required, most people already have!

2. Toga – Toga parties are college favourites due to their ease and cost effectiveness. You need to recreate an ancient Greek or Roman setting ie with pillars and busts etc. The toga is extremely simple to make, it can in fact be a white bed sheet and you are set.

3. Mexican – Get some Mexican flags for your venue. Red, white and green balloons for the 3 flag colors. Send your invitations out on mini Mexican sombreros. Cacti are very cheap and easy to maintain after the party. Also you could get a giant inflatable cactus.

4. James Bond – This is an occasion for the ladies to dress up as glamorous as possible, they will thank you for the occasion. The guys, choose your favourite Bond or Bond villain; Jaws, Oddjob or Blotheld!

5. Hawaiian – Hire a pro cocktail maker or have menus so your visitors can make their own such as the Aloha or the Hawaiian Heartbreaker. Get some beach balls and don’t forget a limbo stick.

6. French – Let your friends know that to be genuine, they have to go a week without showering. Wear black and white horizontal stripey tops and berets. Drink fancy wine and eat cheese on French loaf.

These College Party Ideas will help you put on an incredible event that you’ll be rememebered for! You should look more into your favourite theme party or look into other College Party Ideas.

Studying Abroad: Do It If You Can

by Jim Hart on October 27, 2009

Traveling far and wide in order to study in the midst of a different culture dates back to the beginning of craftsmen. Over time, students have crossed oceans to learn about art, science, math and medicine in other parts of the globe. The benefits of such travel are vast:

1. Personal growth. In addition to developing friendships that tend to last a lifetime, other effects of international study are measurable. Learning in the midst of a different culture, often even a different language, can lead to an increase in the ability to comprehend. What’s more, college students’ overall view of the world evolves to include compassion in areas that didn’t impact them on their home soil. Things like self reliance and independence levels are raised in the process.

2. Ambassador status. Our university students in other countries represent our country to their peers with everything they do. Such intercultural exchanges likely explain why over 98% of college students who took a world study survey claim that they returned home with a broadened perspective of the value system that they went away with. Extended periods of international travel, especially while still young and ‘open’ to the world they see, allows for introspection that might not have been as prolific at home.

3. The journey often leads to a shift in career goals. A new and broader perspective gives students a chance to reevaluate their college major before entering the workforce. What’s more, up to 64% of respondents attribute their decision to attend graduate school to their time abroad.

In past decades students committed to year-long programs, but the current trend is toward six to ten-week sojourns to other countries. Today’s short-term programs do indeed deliver benefits, but the longer a student studies abroad the greater the rewards.

If you are still in college, now is the perfect time to look into the possibility of joining the ranks of those who have studied abroad. Your advisor can counsel you about transferring credits and financial aid, as well as guide you through the application process. What have you got to lose?

Jim Hart has been the director of academic advising at a medium-sized university for eight years. His interests include student exchange programs, online college graduate degrees, career advising, online degrees in the sciences, and CLEP examinations.
