How To Spend One Day In London

by Tom Doerr on March 13, 2010

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world and has a lot to offer. Touring it in one day might seem ridiculous but with an early rise and a good pair of legs it can be done.

First on you list should be Westminster Abbey, if you can get there for 9.30 you will beat the rush and be able to walk round in peace. The Abbey is a shrine of the nation and most of the countries Kings and Queens have been crowned there and many buried there as well.

Home to the country’s government since the 11th century, The Houses of Parliament are a truly astonishing landmark and has been the focal point of some of the political highs and lows of the last millennia. The houses are guarded over by ‘Big Ben’, the world’s most prominent timepiece; you could even set your watch to it.

Following the political theme you can head to Downing Street, in the past you could walk right up to the door of number 10 but now due to security issues you will be fortunate to see someone important getting past the masses of policemen and security officials. Other than that it’s not exactly palatial but worth seeing nevertheless.

Heading north you’ll reach the heart of London, Trafalgar Square. Home to Nelson’s tower it is the scene to many demonstrations. Previously overwhelmed by pigeons, each year masses of party goers descend on this square to celebrate the New Year.

On the boarder of the square you can enter the National Gallery, home of the masterpieces of Da Vinci, Van Gogh and Rembrandt among many. Huge galleries run across 8 centuries of some of the world’s most celebrated art and you need to devote at least an hour to this.

Just north of Trafalgar square is Covent Garden. England’s most historic market it was designed by Inigo Jones in 1633 and home to a variety of stalls and talented street performers.

By this point you may very well be getting bit hungry so why not venture into the pride of Covent Garden; ‘Porters English Restaurant’. Here you can enjoy traditional English pub food. Owned and run by the Earl of Bradford it’s a perfect way to break up your day.

Another must is a journey on the historical London underground a short trip can bring you to Charing Cross Station; from here you are able to walk to Buckingham Palace which should obviously be on your list and if you wish, at certain times of the day you can see the changing of the guards but don’t make any sacrifices for this as it is slightly overrated.

One final tube trip will take you to the Tower of London; over 900 years it has been a palace, a royal mint and most notoriously a prison. Many famous Englishmen have lost their heads there and it’s the national home to blood and gore. An hour long guided tour by one of the famous Beefeaters is well worth the while and will bring the tower to life.

If by now your feet are aching and your stomach is rumbling, drop by ‘The Salisbury’, a fashionable Art Nouveau Pub at the core of the theatre district. Here you can enjoy a wide range of drinks and some home cooked pies.

The best way to spend the evening is to enjoy one of the many shows on offer, whether it’s a big West-End musical or a classic Shakespeare production at the Globe you won’t be let down and it would be the perfect way to relax and take the weight of your feet.

If you want a central London hotel, then stop by Astor Court for affordable luxury single, double, triple and twinhotel rooms in the centre of the capital.

by Tommy Taylor on March 12, 2010

At the end of February and the beginning of March, many families are planning their Easter Holiday. In many cases, they will opt for a holiday at a holiday park close to home.

Holiday parks provide the ideal type of break away for all the family. Particularly when it comes to short breaks at periods like Easter holidays or the half term break. They provide all kinds of activities for everyone and are ideal for families with young children.

The Easter school holidays often mark the beginning of the high season. That is why holiday parks often organise events around a theme or run special offers which aim at attracting visitors to the park. What’s more, most of the activities that are on offer at holiday parks during the Easter period are often outdoor activities which means everyone is able to enjoy spring.

In addition to the activities that are already on offer, some holiday parks will also offer activities around specific theme such as music, enabling the entire family to enjoy activities such as singing and dancing classes or even djing lessons.

What’s more an easter break at a holiday park is often the opportunity for the whole familiy to enjoy the first nice days of spring by spending time relaxing by the swimming pool or having a go at quad-biking; or even venture into the seaside resort where the holiday park you are staying on is based.

Holiday parks are the ideal location for a short break, particularly during the Easter period as they provide a wide range of activities for the whole family to enjoy; including evening entertainment and numerous activities for the children. Furthermore, special offers that some holiday parks put on over the Easter Period can prove very attractive for the entire family.

Amazing Thailand – A Country Rich In Diversity

by Patrick Orion on March 11, 2010

One of the most popular vacation destinations in Asia is Thailand. It is a must see place for those travelers searching for relaxation and entertainment. Large numbers of visitors come to Thailand every year and the count keeps rising. This Southeast Asian nation offers vacationers a trip that will stay in their memories for a long time. After the first trip, many visitors come back again and again. So what does Thailand offer that keeps people coming back for more? Tranquil beaches, culture, exciting entertainment, and great destinations.

Whatever part of Thailand you decide to visit, you will find yourself enjoying your trip. There is a wide variety of geography in Thailand that can give you many different travel experiences. In the north of Thailand is the mountain territory. Lush green forests and hilly terrain mixed in with quiet rural towns make it a must see location. Issan, or the North Eastern territory is a flat plain known for rice growing and agriculture. The eastern part of Thailand is know for it’s grand forests. If you are looking for lush tropical islands and glorious beaches than the southern part of Thailand is for you.

Not only is Thailand known for it’s diverse geography, but it also has a large amount of multi-cultural influences as well. A large Chinese influx in the early years of the Siamese empire has left a profound Chinese influence on the culture. Bangkok has a large China Town, and the impact can also be seen in the food and architecture. In addition, Thailand also adopted a lot of western ways and ideals during the early 20th Century that make it a very enjoyable country for Europeans and Americans to visit.

Thailand has also become well know throughout the world for it’s wild nightlife. Some of the major destinations for tourists seeking fun and crazy night time entertainment is Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket. They have a wide mix of high-end discos, bars, and gogo clubs. It is a very cosmopolitan atmosphere, combined with some world class naughtiness.

Thailand is also a very modern country in terms of infrastructure. Transportation and technological advances have been implemented across the country. Many western countries could learn a thing or two from the public transportation that Thailand has on offer. There are many buses, taxi, airlines, and even the sky train to take you around Bangkok. To make things easier for most tourists, there are signs posted in both Thai and English around the major tourist areas.

There are many more things that make Thailand one great place to visit while on holiday. In addition to those listed above, there are beautiful beaches, temples, and many historic areas to visit. It is a country that will keep you coming back for more.

One popular resort destination is Pattaya Beach Thailand. Here you will find things to do like a visit to Nong Nooch Botanical Gardens.

Find Flights to Bangkok

by Tom Martens on March 10, 2010

All flights to Bangkok from the UK are out of London Heathrow. British Airways and Quantas offer Bangkok flights, as well as flights to Singapore and Hong Kong, as one of its stopping points on the “kangaroo route” to Australia. Also try Thai Airways and Taiwanese carrier, Eva Airways.Cheap flights to Bangkok are easy to find thanks to healthy competition for this route.

Bangkok has two airports. The Don Muang Airport (DMK) was one of the busiest in south-east Asia. The new Bangkok International Suvarnabhui Airport (BKK) is now open offering the largest enclosed terminal building in the world, a sign that Thailand is keeping up with major destinations in the region. Each airport is less than’ miles from Bangkok, and you can get there by taxi, hired car, or bus.

The best time to visit Bangkok is during the busy season which is during November to March, but you will have to shell out more money to enjoy the experience. Weather conditions are perfect at this time of the year and you will surely have a comfortable stay. The only rider is that you will have to spend almost double charges on flights and hotel accommodation as compared to lean season. During lean season, rates are quite less, but the weather is not conducive as it rains during that time making the weather hot and humid. There is rainfall in this area between June to October.

None of this has halted Bangkok from attracting tourists from around the globe. It presents an outstanding array of shopping, early culture, and famous nighttime diversions.

The busy capital of Thailand, Bangkok, has been the cultural center for more than two centuries. There is harmony between the villages that are nestled in between the city structures of glass and the stylings of the resturants. The best nighttime entertainment is just a short walk away with everything a shopper’s heart may desire.

The slowest way to get to destinations in Bangkok will be by walking. You can find tuk-tuks and cabs to be faster and inexpensive so those are good options. And like any other city there are sky trains, subways, buses or river taxi’s. It is also good to know that drivers there tend to be aggressive, so if you are thinking of driving it would be best to just spend the money and hire a car and driver to take you to the places you would like to go.

The drivers will try to talk you into going on special shopping trips or insist the attraction you want to see is closed. They will offer to take you for free if you will stop at their friend’s shop on the way. All these are scams in which the driver gets a cut of what you spend buying trinkets at an over-inflated price.A word about tuk-tuks: all fares are negotiated, so do not get in until you have settled the fare.

Some places you will want to check out will in Bangkok are the National Museum and the Grand Palace. The National Museum will allow you the opportunity to learn the history of Thailand. While the Grand Palace allows you to see one of the most famous architectural symbols. And it is sill in use by the Thai Royal Family for ceremonies

Wat Pho, Temple of the Reclining Buddha is Bangkok’s oldest, largest and most famous temple. The Reclining Buddah is 157 feet long and 49 feet high, gold plated and inlaid with mother of pearl on the soles of its feet. The Joe Luis Theater holds unique nightly puppet theater performances. The puppeteers are trained dancers and are also on stage, playing an integral part of the show.

Moving Day In Costa Rica

by Frank Scott on March 9, 2010

Conducting photo tours in Costa Rica can be quite an experience because I never know what my group and I will encounter. Here is an entertaining event that occurred while we were traveling to one of our locations.

One of the destinations for my group in Costa Rica Photo Tours is the beautiful, pristine Osa Peninsula along the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, a place that National Geographic says is “the most biologically diverse place” on the planet. In order to reach this location by vehicle we drive through the tiny village of Ojochal, which is very near my home.

One of my groups discovered that moving day for some Costa Ricans can be rather unique. As my group and I were passing through the village we saw an incredible sight. But before I tell you the story let me tell you a bit about the man who was moving.

The fellow who was moving was one of my neighbours, Senor Wilson (real Spanish name, don’t you think?), who has brought my wife and me flowering plants since we moved in. It was really funny the first day that he stood at the top of the driveway with plants in hand. He was so polite that he would not come down to the house without our invitation even though he was there to give us a present.

We finally realized after speaking (he in Spanish and we mostly in English that ) that he wanted to give us the flowering plants he was carrying. Very neighborly. Particularly when you understand that Senor Wilson did not own a car and walked, plants in hand, down a mountain on a dirt road–an hour to our house and an hour back!

With the passage of time, Senor Wilson has given me flowering plants many times. Often he stands there waiting to see where I will plant it. I would probably do the same thing if I lugged it down a mountain for an hour. However, there are so many things to do that planting this gift is never one of my priorities. Certainly, I never thought that I would be tested on my ability to choose a location and plant something when I moved to Costa Rica from Canada.

One day Wilson arrived at the house with another plant, accompanied by his two sons who were going swimming in the river beside our house. He gave me the new plant and then asked where I had planted the others that he had brought.

Well, they were still in the pots (these pots are not the plastic pots that we are familiar with but old aluminum kettles with drainage holes made by stabbing the bottom with a machete), would you believe it? Wilson saw this and decided that he not only would bring the plants but he would plant them in our little garden. That tells you all you need to know about this good man.

Back to moving day. As my photography tour group and I were driving a dusty Ojochal road, we saw a man walking his horse. It was Wilson. We stopped the van and I saw that the horse was carrying two huge white bags filled with what seemed to be clothes and household items. There was also a broom wedged between one of the bags with its blue bristle extending between the horse’s ears. For the life of me, it looked as if the horse had a bristle blue tiara on! Poor horse, not very macho!

Wilson was holding the horse’s bridle in one hand and a birdcage in the other. A sight to behold. A man, a horse, a crown, and a birdcage. Moving day!

I started the conversation as usual with “Hola, que tal?” “How are you?” And then I asked if he was moving (only kidding). But, sure enough, the horse was neighbor Wilson’s version of a moving van. I believe it is called a grass-eating 4 X 4.

He explained that he and his wife (who is a tiny little thing that looks about 14) were going to house-sit one of the B&Bs whose owner went back to Germany for the rainy season. He also said that it would be easier for his wife and 3 kids to live there because it was closer to the pueblo as the B&B is almost in the pueblo where the children would go to school.

The birdcage was quite interesting. It seemed to me that on one of the previous trips someone could have brought the cage down to the new digs.

Carting flowering plants and birdcages is all in Wilson’s job description. He told me and the group that the little bird was very young (parrot or parakeet, I don’t know), that it just loved to talk and knew many words. As though he understood, the bird started showing off, chattering away while we are talking about it. I would tell you what it said but my command of bird Spanish remains very poor to this day. Sorry.

You can imagine that my group was very excited about taking pictures of a crowned horse, chattering bird, and Costa Rica family walking down a mountain, worldly possessions carried by their trusty steed. Moving day in Costa Rica. One never knows what one will see or experience on my photo tour of Costa Rica.

It Is Official: Costa Rica is First For Satisfaction Of Life

by Victor C. Krumm on March 9, 2010

Where is the “happiest place on earth ?” Disneyworld claims it is and, though it is a great place to enjoy once in a while, the most satisfying place to live in the world is officially tiny Costa Rica, winner of the Happy Planet Index.

The Index measures three things: high life expectancy, high life satisfaction, and a low ecological footprint. 143 countries were rated, representing 99 per cent of the world’s population, and Costa Rica came out on top—by a lot.

The Happy Planet Index asked: 1. What is a person’s life expectancy ( premise: it is better to live longer than die young)? 2. While alive, how satisfied are people with the quality of their life (premise: living longer but miserably is not very satisfying)? 3. How much does a country cost the planet (premise: sustainable development is better than exhausting resources and has less effect on global warming) ?

Like me, you probably assume that the most developed nations will come in towards the top but that is not the case. Despite its wealth and power, the United States occupies number 114. England does better but still only ranks 74th.

There is a very dramatic difference between Costa Rica and the United States. Costa Ricans live slightly longer than Americans (and have universal, almost free coverage), report substantially higher levels of satisfaction with their life, and yet make a per capita carbon footprint 75% less than the States.

It is no accident that Costa Rica is at the top of the rankings The country is committed to sustainable development. While the Western world, China and India are committed to relying upon nonrenewable, nonsustainable resources (think oil) that are exhausting the planet’s resources and contributing to serious global pollution and warming, 99% of Costa Rica’s energy is completely renewable and sustainable. As developed countries dither about how to address power needs and meet the challenges of pollution and global warming, tiny Costa Rica has taken action. More than two decades ago, at a time when so many other countries were cutting and burning their forests, Costa Rica decided to go the opposite direction and now there are 20% more forested areas. Presciently, it has long denied oil drilling off its shores, choosing sustainability over exhaustion. And, in 2007 it became the first country to commit to being completely carbon neutral by 2021.

Costa Rica’s per capita income is only a fraction of that of the United States and other western countries but its ranking at number 1 in all the world is a model to emulate.

Looking For A Great Costa Rica Vacation, Try Jaco!

by Victor Krumm on March 9, 2010

Jaco is a small, vibrant town in Costa Rica and a very popular place for students wanting some fun during spring break or summer vacation. But, not just students. Today, tourists from around the world visit Jaco year-round, though December to May are considered “high season” (the most people, the highest accommodation costs). Whatever month you want to visit, the Jaco area is the place to go for sun, great beaches and activities.

About a two hour drive from San Jose, this bustling town sits on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. For many years, it has been one the most popular beaches in Costa Rica, in large part because of its nightlife. Its reputation as a fantastic “party beach” is now well known.

Over the years, many tourists have made this a favorite location for their visits, citing its casual, relaxed, laid back, friendly, party atmosphere. There are lots of great beaches nearby, some of which are very tranquil, all of which are gorgeous. Jaco has boomed over the last half dozen years or so. Where there was once a quiet little road (except at night) road through town, today there are towering high rises and resorts, and lots and lots of bars, restaurants, and shops.

College kids have long traveled to Jaco because of its “party beach” and cheap accommodations. There is great surfing and lots of bars and discos. They are joined by people of every age and background who come here to enjoy the many things to do and see. Today, there are many restaurants, taverns, tourist traps, and nightclubs to choose from. Whatever your budget, from luxury to basic (think hostels without hot water) there’s a place for you—-not to mention a tourist souvenir shop.

Though the beach directly in front of Jaco (Jaco Beach) has been very popular for many years, it is surpassed by nearby beaches (literally just a couple of miles/kilometers away). These beaches have fewer people and are some of the most ecologically pure in all of the world, bearing Blue Flag certifications for cleanliness. In particular, I recommend spectacular Hermosa Beach, just a couple of miles from Jaco. It is pristine and has some of the best surfing on the planet. In fact, in late July professional surfers from more than 35 countries are going to descend upon Hermosa in the days for world surfing championships—and party at night in Jaco.

There are dozens of different things to do and innumerable places to visit close at hand. Costa Rica is tiny but filled with interesting places and activities. Go whitewater rafting or learn to sea kayak. Take a horseback ride along the beach or through the mountains (if you’re into extreme riding, you can literally ride across Costa Rica from the Pacific to the Caribbean). Visit volcanoes, sit in volcanic hot springs, try rappelling in tropical mountains, go ballooning. Or just sit back and enjoy the great ocean views and beautiful, romantic sunsets. But, take care when swimming. Some of the beaches, wonderful for surfing, can be dangerous for swimming because of riptides. There are no lifeguards—and no warning signs—so ask if it is safe to swim before jumping in.

Consider chartering a boat for a trip to Costa Ricas world-famous fishing grounds. Huge marlin that can swim 70 miles an hour and leap 10 feet from the water await. Sometimes the schools of tuna or sailfish are thick. Whales travel from Antarctica to breed in the warm waters—as do their cousins from the Arctic. Think you came a long way? Imagine swimming thousands of miles!

First discovered by Christopher Columbus, today Costa Rica is discovered anew by folks from every place on the planet. Though it is only the size of West Virginia, one of every five species of plant and animal is found here. Travel Costa Rica when you visit Jaco. Bring a camera and your sense of adventure.

The BestPlaces Inside The Dominican Republic

by Aaron Harden on March 9, 2010

Imagine pure white sands and a sapphire blue sea lapping against the shore; that perfectly describes the Dominican Republic. This island is well known for its visit by Christopher Columbus.

This small island is steeped in history and is very cultural. One of the most popular places for vacations; he Dominical Republic has much to offer the tourists with many luxurious resorts dotted around the island.

Two main things are manufactured here, and you can see them both being made if you take a trip to the cigar factory or distillery. If golf is your game, you are also well catered for. The areas of forest are very exciting to explore and it is a shoppers paradise with the price of its goods.

A lot of areas in the Dominican Republic have been changed into resorts. On the Eastern side of the Island sits Punta Cana; this is one of the main tourist destinations.

All inclusive is an option growing quickly in popularity, and the only problem you will have in Punta Cana is deciding which one of the many to go to! The gorgeous beaches are second to none and its easy to see why so many rate Punta Cana as their favorite place for a vacation.

Another main destination is Puerto Plata, in the north of the Dominican Republic. This also has numerous resorts offering all inclusive vacations, and if you are a water sports enthusiast, the Playa Dorada beach is for you.

One of the smaller resorts, but one that is home to a museum full of artefacts from the area is La Romana. Further south than the other resorts, it still has a few places where you can stay all inclusive. A trip well worth taking is a boat over to Catalina Island.

The oldest American city, which also houses the oldest Cathedral, is Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic’s chief city. All inclusive is the way to go here, with a great choice of resorts.
