How To Be A Mindful Traveler

by Adriana Noton on February 25, 2010

These days, consumers are becoming more mindful about how their lifestyle affects the environment. For this reason, more people are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. One such area that is seeing an increase in ‘green’ consumers is the travel industry. More travelers are now becoming more mindful of the environment when they travel.

The following are a number of ways to be a mindful traveler:

1. Make sure that you book a flight on an airline that recycles the refuse left from serving beverages and food to their passengers. To help offset your carbon emissions, consider direct flights to your destination.

2. When you book your hotel, consider smaller accommodations. For instance, a homestay is much smaller and cozier than a large hotel. If you stay in a big hotel, check to see if there are any ‘green’ hotels in the area. Eco-friendly hotels will have implemented such ‘green’ measures as water conservation programs, energy efficient appliances, recycle and composting programs, and energy reducing programs. They will also incorporate ‘green’ practices in guest rooms such as recycling baskets and shampoo and soap dispensers. You can also do your part by using the same towels and linens during your stay and turn off the air conditioner and lights when you are away from the room. As well, consider a longer stay. If you stay in one spot instead of traveling from one hotel or resort to another, you will be reducing your carbon footprint instead of taking more flights.

3. Instead of using a rental car in your destination area, take advantage of public transportation such as a bus or hotel van. Whenever possible, try walking. It is good for your health, the environment, and you can get an up-close and personal look at the community.

4. When you are out in the community, be sensitive, and ask permission to take pictures of the locals. When possible, eat foods that have been grown locally rather than eating foreign foods that have to be imported. Make sure that you do your research before you go on your trip. It will help prevent any misunderstandings and will help show your respect for local customs and dress. It is important to be generous such as giving good tips. Make sure you do not engage in excessive haggling so you do not upset any vendors.

Before you leave home, you can begin your trip being ‘green’ by turning off your lights, turning down the thermostat, and adjusting the air conditioner. During your flight and while staying at your destination, there are many things you can do to be mindful of the environment and people. Not only will you be doing your part to conserve and protect the environment, it will make your trip even more enjoyable and memorable.

Advice On International Car Hire

by Jason Hall on February 21, 2010

Renting a car seems like a simple enough process. You shop around and find the best deal, book it and pick it up. When you are renting a vehicle internationally, however, there are some additional things that you must be aware of.

To start with you may be required to obtain an international driving permit in order to rent a vehicle at an overseas destination. This permit is not always required for your international travel rental, but it is mandatory by many other countries. If required, your international driving permit needs to be obtained prior to leaving your country, therefore you will want to look into this several weeks in advance to ensure that if the permit is required you have enough time to get the documentation and paperwork together. In addition to needing an international driving permit, many countries also require that you have a valid drivers license so you will want to be sure that you have both documents on you when you go to pick up your rental.

Next you need to find out if the country you are visiting requires an international insurance card, as proof that you are insured while driving your rental internationally. This is usually required for all international rental cars, so what you really need to do is contact your insurance company and inform them that you are in need of this documentation. Many insurance companies are regionally located so the insurance card that you receive will let the rental company know that you are a carrier of valid insurance, therefore you are eligible to rent your vehicle. Much like the international driving permit, you will be required to obtain this form in your home country, so you will want to check with your rental company several weeks prior to your visit to ensure you have enough time to obtain the required documentation.

Internationally there are many companies that will probably be familiar to you and it is advisable to use a company that is known to you when leasing internationally. It is also important to book any extras you will need in advance with your rental company. Whether you will need a child safety seat, ski carrier or a GPS you should reserve these items in advance. Don’t assume that they will be available when you arrive. And whenever possible do pay the extra amount and lease a GPS with your international rental. Since you will be traveling around a region that is unfamiliar to you, it will be handy to help direct you not only to tourist attractions and to your accommodations, but will also help you locate emergency services in the area you will be visiting.

International car rentals will go more smoothly if you arrange everything in advance and line up the paperwork you will need prior to your travel. This will ensure that when you arrive you can sign the paperwork and quickly be on your way.

Iceland And Gay Holiday Deals

by Howie Holben on February 18, 2010

The majority of travelers that journey to Iceland each year do so to experience its unique, diverse natural beauty that is unlike anything you will find on gay vacations in other countries. From volcanoes and Europe’s largest glacier, to the Northern Lights and the sparsely populated island of Grimsey on the Arctic Circle, Iceland offers unmatched opportunities to experience the outdoors in a whole new way. Kayaking, hiking, rafting, ice climbing, bird watching, whale watching and ocean fishing are all popular activities throughout the country and are ideal for inclusion in adventurous gay tours.

Visitors who prefer an urban vacation will also find just what they are searching for in Iceland, especially in the capital city, Reykjavik, which is where individual travelers and folks traveling with gay tours will find a variety of historical and cultural attractions, dining and shopping, a beautiful waterfront, museums and an exciting nightlife.

Travelers on gay vacations to Iceland will not want to miss the bird watching opportunities and natural beauty of Grimsey, a small island just 25 miles offshore. Sandvik, Grimsey’s only town, has a population of just 150 and is Iceland’s northernmost settlement. The island is home to numerous bird colonies and is well known for the steep cliffs found along its shores, which have long been a draw for sightseers partaking in gay travel to Iceland. Visitors with a keen eye may also spot polar bears onshore or just offshore on ice drifts coming from Greenland.

Whether travelers come to Grimsey on gay tours or on individual treks, they will not want to forget to get a certificate stating that they have crossed the Arctic Circle while they are there. Those looking for outdoor gay travel adventures might also want to venture to Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, or one of the other glaciers that cover more than 10% of Iceland, for ice climbing and plenty of photo opportunities.

There are also a number of hiking and sightseeing opportunities throughout the country, including breathtaking cliffs, waterfalls, picturesque coastlines and Videy Island, which is just minutes offshore and is home to the oldest stone building in Iceland, as well as many sculptural art pieces.

The time of year chosen for gay vacations to Iceland is an important factor in determining which of the country’s natural phenomena you will experience during your trip: the Polar Nights, Midnight Sun or Northern Lights.

Travelers should plan their travel dates in accordance to which of these they wish to experience. Whichever time of year you decide to partake in gay vacations to Iceland, there is one must-do activity that cannot be missed. You absolutely must make the quick 45 minute drive from Reykjavik to experience the glowing, geothermal saltwater pool surrounded by beautiful black lava rocks at the Blue Lagoon.

Ecuador For Gay Vacation Destinations

by Howie Holben on February 18, 2010

Ecuador may be a small country, but it is home to an expansive cultural and geographic diversity, which includes an array of indigenous groups with distinctive, unique cultures and languages. With tropical rainforests, snow-capped volcanoes and picturesque coastlines, Ecuador offers landscapes and varying climates that make any month of the year an excellent time for relaxing gay tours or enticing adventures.

Perhaps best known for the Galapagos Islands, the mainland is also home to many attractions and sightseeing opportunities that make gay tours to Ecuador well worth the trip. Whether you are in search of a spiritual retreat, an outdoors adventure or gay travel that includes getting to know the LGBT community in Quito, exploring the rainforest and lounging on the beach, you are sure to discover the many reasons that Ecuador is such a popular travel destination year after year as soon as you step off the plane.

Travelers will find that Quito is largely the center of LGBT life and has the most visible community. This is particularly true in the La Mariscal neighborhood, which is the location of the Quito Pride celebration each year in June, as well as the district where LGBT-friendly clubs, bars, cafs and other establishments can be found. This bohemian neighborhood is a popular afternoon hangout and is the place to go for a night on the town on Fridays and Saturdays.

Aside from La Mariscal, this city that sits at 9,200 feet above sea level, yet still lower than the nearby Pichincha volcano that rises to 13,000 feet, has much to offer, including streets lined with cafs, art galleries and shops, and a historic district that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Local attractions include the Capilla del Hombre Guayasamin, the Museo de la Ciudad, the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo and the many stalls of handicrafts in the Parque el Ejido.

Rights and protections in Ecuador have expanded over the past decade, allowing for gay vacations that are more enjoyable and safer. At the same time, there is still an air of machismo permeating the culture, which means discretion in most public places is still a good idea. One way to avoid issues and more fully enjoy your voyage to Ecuador is to plan to participate in gay tours when embarking on gay vacations to this diverse country.

This will allow you to relax and get the most out of your journey, while professional travel organizers take care of the logistics and ensure that you will have the chance to experience the many historic, cultural and natural attractions that Ecuador offers.

Why I Love Hunting In Georgia

by Craig Simpson on February 5, 2010

Georgia is a very popular place for quail hunting. Much like Alabama Quail Hunting there is a strong tradition for hunting the tasty flying bird known as the quail. Every year, hunters hunt everywhere the north Georgia mountains to the southern Georgia swamps looking for Georgia quail as well as other water fowl. The Georgia Quail hunting season runs mid November-late February (Limit 12 per Hunter).

The sport of hunting is very huge in Georgia. In fact over 300,000 hunters registered in Georgia in the 2008 hunting season. Not only is hunting a sport but it is a way of life in Georgia as hunters often have to hunt to feed their family all year long. After quail season, the bird hunters of Georgia look ahead for March so that they can hunt turkey. The turkey limit in Georgia is three per hunter! Turkey love to roam in Georgia beside rivers and streams.

The Georgia low lands are famous for their waterfowl. There are opportunities everywhere to hunting kill plenty of birds anywhere in the state of Georgia. (except in the in the middle of Atlanta!) Also home to the woodcock, some varieties are nearing extinction so you need to study and know your woodcock species well.

One of the birds that Georgia hunters love to bag include the marsh hen. The marsh and can provide a lot of good tasting meat for a family. If you just want to shoot something, try the crow. Hunting regulations in Georgia say you can kill as many as you want. Go, shoot some crow, and have fun!

If you are really searching for adventure you can go alligator hunting around the first of September to October! There is plenty more hunting in Georgia though! Of course everyone knows that deer hunting is big in Georgia. There is also bear hunting in the north Georgia mountains for the more adventurous!

Wild boar hunting is another sport catching on in the state of Georgia key to the overpopulation of the hogs in the upper parts of the state . The wild hog is uprooting roots and destroying much habitat that other species need for survival! People don’t like them because they can dig up the gardens and mess up fences.

My hunt of choice is bob white quail hunting, as well as dove hunting! I love cooked quail after a hunt. Although you might not get a lot of meat per bird, the flavor is awesome. I will keep it simple and marinate the breast in a sweet barbecue sauce with fresh garlic for a few hours. Can I get the skillet grill hot, and add a little olive oil. I will add the quail breast and cook about 10 minutes until golden brown! Nothing beats a belly full of quail on a Georgia Saturday night!

George is a perfect location for quail to thrive. You can find great grassy marshes around much of Georgia, often with a corn field or soybean crop beside them. This is perfect habitat for many waterfowl and other wildlife.

There is nothing greater than quail on the bob on your next hunting trip! You will have a hard time finding quail in the state of Georgia. They are everywhere, and the best way to find locations to hunt is at wingshootingdestinations.com.

Find Quail Hunting Lodges in Georgia at Georgia Quail Hunting and a large list of quail hunting spots at quail hunting in Georgia lodges page.

Melbourne St Kilda

by Jasmine Zahara on February 5, 2010

St Kilda is one of Melbourne’s most vibrant and multicultural suburbs with many interesting groups contributing to what is one of the most eclectic parts of Melbourne. Approximately 6 km from the Cit of Melbourne, St Kilda is easily accessible by car, bus and tram which a train line running along the perimeter. St Kilda was named after schooner ‘Lady of St Kilda’ which anchored off of the now famous St Kilda beach in 1841. It was named by Lieutenant James Lawrence who was one of the areas first settlers. In the early days rich settlers built their splendid mansions along the water front taking full advantage of the ocean views and the rolling St Kilda hills in the background. At the end of WWII St Kilda developed into one of the seedier areas of Melbourne with many red-light attractions taking over the once elegant buildings and streets. This attracted many individuals including musicians and artists looking for budget Melbourne accommodation. While elements of the red light era still remain in St Kilda most have moved on or been pushed out by the soaring residential property and accommodation and the new rich who have become regulars at the trendy cafes, markets, clubs and restaurants which all contribute to St Kilda becoming one of Melbourne’s most popular tourist destinations.

The St Kilda beach is the most visited beach in Melbourne at present. The emergence of renowned theatres and important festivals and events of Melbourne had brought about a turnaround in the reputation of St Kilda. Today, the major St Kilda attractions include the historic structures around the Esplanade area of St Kilda Melbourne and the shorefront area. Many of these structures have a Moorish architectural theme, featuring domes. Another early twentieth century St Kilda attraction is the Luna Park, an amusement park with historic railway that is quite scenic and the ‘Moonface’ entry into the amusement park.

St Kilda Pier offers an easy platform from which to walk out the St Kilda Pavilion which sits at the end of the pier. The long breakwater provides shelters for the St Kilda harbour and nearby marina. There is also a little known Fairy Penguin colony along St Kilda pier that is a popular tour for tourists. Sun lovers and swimmers can enjoy the clean white beaches and safe flat waters. There is also a ferry service runs from the St Kilda Pier across to Williamstown, which is another popular Melbourne tourist waterfront suburb located on the opposite side of the bay. There are two main ’street’ destinations in St Kilda, the first being Acland Street which is home to trendy cafes and delicious cake shops. The Fitzroy Street, once famous for its red light activities, is now home to some of the finest restaurants and hotels in Melbourne. St Kilda Town Hall was designed by architect Enrico Taglietti and is a strikingly impressive building.

Built in 1887 the George Hotel is one of St Kilda’s many accommodation options and has since been converted into studio apartments. Budget backpacker hostels are also popular in St Kilda and the St Kilda Coffee Palace, built in the 1870s is one of the busiest. Once offering accommodation the Prince of Wales Hotel (circa 1940) now operates as Melbourne music. St Kilda accommodation is popular as it is within easy reach of the centre of Melbourne and offers a near inner city beach atmosphere that is unrivalled in Melbourne. Another St Kilda hotel that must be mentioned is the iconic ‘Espy’ (Esplanade Hotel) as it is known amongst locals, which was built in 1878.

Today there are an increasing number of hotels in St Kilda including such well known brands as The Bayside, Quest St Kilda Bayside Inn, Best Western Easystay Novotel Melbourne, Cosmopolitan Hotel, The Prince Hotel, Quest Kimberley, Oslo Hotel, Olembia Guesthouse, St Kilda Beach, Easystay At Carlisle, Royal Albert Apartments, Charnwood Motor Inn and Eildon Mansion. Prices for St Kilda accommodation vary considerably but are often marginally cheaper than for the Melbourne accommodation offered in the central business district of Melbourne.

Gay Holiday Spots In Mongolia

by Howie Holben on January 14, 2010

With a barely existent gay scene, is putting Mongolia on your list for gay tours a good idea? Despite little knowledge and a practically invisible LGBT community, Mongolia offers incredible views, outdoor activities and vibrant culture that may appeal to all travelers, gay or straight. Homosexuality is legal and the unique experience of Mongolia makes it a great destination for gay couples and groups.

Mongolia is sparsely populated, leaving plenty of room for the beautiful lakes, majestic mountains and flowing rivers for which the country is often known. Mongolia boasts a unique history as the Mongols and Genghis Khan once ruled powerfully, only for the country to later fall under Soviet grasps.

Despite having little in the way of gay establishments, the unique history and culture of Mongolia make it a worthwhile destination for gay travelers.

It is best to start your journey in Ulaanbaatar, where guesthouses typically serve as travel agencies that can help you plan your trip. It is best to travel into the capital and spend several days planning your countrywide excursions. There is an international airport, but consider taking the train from Beijing in order to view the beautiful countryside.

Guesthouses are the best place to stay as they offer cheap accommodation (roughly twenty U. S. Dollars per night) and also act as travel agencies that can help you to draw up an itinerary.

From there, the options are plentiful. For shorter stays, consider a local home stay near Terelj National Park, just two hours from the capital and an easy ride to the Gobi Desert. You might also want to think about a trip to Genghis Khan’s ancient capital or adding a week to head north for spectacular lake, mountain and river excursions.

Longer stays of a month or longer are ideal for a big loop of the country to include the aforementioned destinations all in one trip.

Aside from outdoor and wildlife excursions, city life is also worth exploring. Ulaanbaatar is home to good and inexpensive restaurants like Mongol Shabu, where you can eat well for under five dollars. You can also check out the world renowned Mongolian National Symphony Orchestra at The Culture Show or visit the Natural History Museum.

Homosexuality is not typically received well in Mongolia, but not necessarily as a result of religion or conservative values. Instead, there seems to be lack of information and gay context that prevents openness about homosexuality. Nevertheless, it is not considered unsafe or unfriendly towards gay vacations and can still provide an excellent vacation.

There are other options available besides traveling on your own. Various tour groups, specializing in gay travel groups, offer vacations in Mongolia.

These agencies typically excursions that cater to the interests of culture lovers and active outdoors travelers by visiting places such as local traditional festivals, the ancient capital city and museums, as well as the desert, camel farms and horseback riding destinations.

These groups often include visits with local LGBT groups and a look at the barely existent gay scene in country. Despite a small gay scene, the country offers beautiful landscapes and unique culture that make it an unforgettable excursion for gay destinations.

Report by Howie Holben for Mongolia gay holiday destinations. Spirit Journeys also offers gay meditation retreats.

Tips and Advice on Rigging Jobs

by Quentin J. Brooks on January 11, 2010

Most people think that rigging jobs are only for big, strong guys that enjoy difficult manual labor. But this is only a small part of the rigging jobs that are available on a drill ship. Offshore oil rigs are self-sufficient entities and are often out at sea for 14 to 21 days at a time. During that time they need cooks, nurses, doctors and maintenance crew, as well as, mechanics, painters, engineers and foreman.

You might still enjoy working on an oil rig, even if you think it isn’t for you. People who work on rigs get to travel while making money. There are oil rigs right by Africa, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Rotation shifts When working oil rig jobs, you work from fourteen to twenty-one days at any one time and then you’ve got an additional fourteen to twenty-one days of. Thus, fundamentally, you’re only working sixty percent of a year and you may do what you want with the remaining time. This allows individuals with rigging jobs a chance to view the region they’re working in. If you’re on a rig off China’s coast, then you may really explore China on your time off.

So this becomes a lot easier to do, oil rigging jobs pay very nicely. Entry level jobs typically pay approximately forty-five thousand dollars yearly. If you bring a background, experience, or education which is of value to the position, your earnings may approach eighty thousand dollars yearly. Supervisors and Drill Leaders earn approximately eighty to one hundred thousand yearly and experts may make more than two hundred thousand yearly. Thus, you’ll have adequate earnings for traveling during your time off.

Reed Gift Fair Sydney an GHA Home and Giving Fair Sydney

by Howard Rudd on December 31, 2009

Australia hosts a number of large trade fairs each year which cover a broad range of industries, services and professions. Of all the annual trade fairs it would be fair to say that the bi-annual Reed Gift Fair and GHA Home and Giving Fair in each of Melbourne and Sydney are the largest and most significant in terms of wholesale exhibitors and retail buyers. The Reed Gift Fair in Sydney and the GHA Gift Fair in Sydney each February are the must see, must visit, trade fairs for shop owners and other retailers selling a broad range of gift style products.

The February Sydney GHA Gift Fair is held concurrently with the Reed Gift Fair and is a leading trade event that brings together industry participants including retailers, wholesalers, agents and distributors. The Reed Gift Fair is located at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour and the GHA Home and Giving Fair is partly located at Darling Harbour but predominantly located at Homebush. GHA runs regular free ferry and bus services from Darling Harbour to Homebush for the duration of the trade fair.

Both the Reed Gift Fair in Sydney and the GHA Gift Fairs in Sydney offer the perfect opportunity for wholesalers to introduce their products retailers and for retailers to source the newest and trendiest products as well as the popular favourites. There are many Australian and overseas wholesalers, suppliers and distributors at the Sydney Gift Fair that are regularly introducing new products into the Australian market. For any business determined to stay competitive visiting the Gift Fair in Sydney is a must.

To attend either the Sydney GHA Home and Giving Fair and the Sydney Reed Gift Fair guests need to be registered which is best done before the event. It can be done online at either the Reed or GHA websites. If you are registering on the day be sure to arrive early and bring at least three pieces of personal identification and three pieces of business identification. Once you are registered and through the doors a world of familiar and new products are there awaiting your business. You will find home wares, furniture, gifts, floral products, toiletries, pots, dcor, clothing, trinkets, jewellery, kitchen utensils and appliances, wood crafts and many Australian made products. Over the duration of the fairs there are also seminars, workshops and informative presentations all designed to help make your business more successful.

For anyone planning on visiting the Sydney Gift Fairs who is new to the experience, as well as regular buyers and retailers it is strongly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes, stop for regular rests and most importantly to book your Sydney accommodation early. Restaurants should also be booked upon your arrival as there are many people attending the gift fair and all will be looking to eat out at the end of the day. Inside the Sydney GHA and Reed Gift Fairs there are a number of food outlets and hot drink vendors strategically located around the floor space. It is well worth planning to eat a little earlier than normal as the queues and lack of tables around normal lunch hours can be annoying.

If you are serious buyer looking for new designs and stock that will sell well, then you should be attending the GHA Home and Giving Fair in Sydney and the Reed Gift Fair at least once every year. While the fairs are held twice each year in Sydney and twice each year in Melbourne the bigger fairs tend to be Sydney in February and Melbourne in August.

Learn more about the Reed Gift Fair 2010 and nearby accommodation. Visit the Sydney Accommodation website where you can find out all about the Sydney Gift Fairs 2010 .

No Harm With Disaster Survival Kits

by Paul F. Joshua on December 20, 2009

There are some places out there that sell these disaster survival kits. However, you pay a small fortune for them. Sure, you would probably buy one if it came down to it. However, if you want to save a little money, you can create one for your family in case disaster strikes. There are a few common things that any kit should have. We will walk you through a few of these.

When thinking of the things that every kit has to have, the first thing that comes to mind should be food and water. The water should be enough that everyone can have a few sips as you do not want to get dehydrated. The food should last at least three days and should not spoil. Everyone recommends using canned food.

The next thing that they always tell you that you should have on hand is a weather radio. These should be battery powered as you might not have electricity. This can help you keep track of any alerts and know when it is safe to come out.

Things to keep warm are always a good idea as well. For instance blankets so that you do not get hypothermia. There should be extra clothing and supplies to practice as much proper hygiene as possible. The warmer you are the less likely you are to be in any serious danger. If you pass out you should have something with you that can help them to identify you. That is how people can check on you. It is a frightening thing but you do have to be prepared for it.

Some people make sure that they have first aid kits. While some do this everyone should do this. It might be a bit of time before someone can make it to where you are in the case of an emergency. Along with that you should have forms of identification so that if someone is unconscious they can tend to you. Keeping things that can help the workers to get you proper care is always good.

You might not even think about the small things, but pets and infants are the ones you really have to worry about. There are things that they cannot eat and so forth. You might not be thinking about that when the time comes. To help this, you should have the formula, diapers, and wipes on hands for infants and the dog food and cat food on hand for the pets.

Blankets and clothing are something else that people should always make sure they have. You never know when disaster could strike. You do not know what type of disaster could strike. SO be prepared for everything by making sure you will be warm in case of needing some warmth.

When you have these items you can be sure that you are prepared for the worst. Many people laugh it off, but anything could happen. They need to know who you are in these times of need and you have to have the resources to keep yourselves alive.

Everyone says the world is going to end and it is just a matter of time. How long? No one can say. So, when the disaster strikes, government wants you set. That is why they have released disaster survival kits and disaster survival kit information.
