Availability Of Bayonets

by Richard Benson on September 14, 2009

The Swiss army began off as a brand that supplied officers knives to the Swiss Army. From there they started creating their own new variety of products and set a standard in the market. Now this company is known all over the world for its products and is revered by one and all. Not only that it has become a household name it is no longer associated only with army products alone.

Swiss army products have die-hard followers. Amongst the things that are connected with the Swiss army are bayonets. These bayonets are every Swiss army product collectors dream. Although Swiss army bayonets date back to a long time ago today they are available as army surplus items and are quite popular amongst the collectors.

The bayonet is a part of the knife family. It is basically a dagger and can be considered to be a spiked shaped weapon that can be used in the battle field. It was a rather innovative creation as it was specifically designed to fit on top of the muzzle of a gun such as a rifle or the like. This transformed the rifle into a spear like weapon in the case of running out of ammo.

Thus the bayonet was a useful weapon and served the purpose of being extremely handy during a war when the transformed rifle would be the last resort for combat. These helped not only Swiss armies but also other armies during that time. It helped the soldier to protect himself during attack by his enemies even if he had run out of bullets. During the time when war were fairly simpler the bayonet was a useful innovation.

Practically and unfortunately the demand for bayonets have fallen as modern-day warfare techniques bayonets in the past and now they sell them off to make some money.

Those who are interested in buying the bayonet can try their luck at the army surplus shops or search for them in the internet. Be careful the the original Swiss army bayonets contain a blade length of 9.4 inches and a holder that measures 4.8 inches.

The author is an avid collector of weapons like Swiss army pocket knife . More information on old weapons like bayonet can be found by clicking on the above link.
