Thoughts On Insuring Your Motorhome

by Timothy Simons Grimshaw on March 12, 2010

I read in Insurance Times recently that the financial Ombudsman had decreed that it would, in certain circumstances, back a policyholder against an insurer excluding claims for leaving keys in or near a car. I can’t help but wonder if the same would apply for a motor home. As an insurance broker, I almost feel that this story is not one to publicise.

On a recent motorhome holiday my family and I had had a late night playing cards and when we eventually turned in, we were all very tired and so we woke up the next day already late for our arranged meeting with our friends and fellow motor-homers the Wilsons. Then of course we had the morning rush and the queue for the shower and by the time we were ready to leave our friends had decided to explore the countryside without us.

I then realised I had no idea where the keys were so I looked for them, and couldn’t find them. My family then joined in the search and in my usual calm and patient manner I accused each family member of stealing them, then moved on to accusations of half-hearted searching before finally accepting my son’s version of events which was that aliens must have come from mars and stolen the keys to our motorhome. So I then went to the cab to get my mobile so I could call my insurance company for help. I was stranded in a field with a grumpy family and to make matters worse, it was about to rain.

There in the middle of the cab, sitting next to my phone, were the keys! I couldn’t believe that I’d left the keys to my beloved motorhome in the cab. Being an insurance man I couldn’t help but wonder if my motorhome would have been insured if it had been stolen under those circumstances. And so my mind drifted back to the Insurance Times article.

If my motorhome had been a car the ombudsman would have considered

Location

Was I in a position to deter a thief

Was I recklessly ignoring the risks

Mitigating factors

Whether I knew about the exclusion in the insurance policy

I would like to think that this kind of thinking would have applied to me and my motorhome. If you use an insurance broker there is a much higher chance of finding a comprehensive insurance policy to cover you whatever your situation.

Unfortunately, a medical emergency always has the possibility of arising, regardless of how well the trip is planned. To make sure that every visitor to the United States has access to the necessary level of care, USA tourists health insurance has become commonplace. Any medication that might be prescribed by a physician should also be covered with most types of insurance.

Most USA tourists health insurance will cover a range of medical expenses including emergency care and basic check-ups. When a tourist secures this form of insurance for their visit to the United States, they will no longer have to worry about the additional stress that can occur when securing the funds needed to cover a medical emergency.

Contrary to popular opinion, securing USA tourists health insurance is a simple process. Most tourists choose to lock in their insurance online with a secured financial transaction. Any policy that is secured online has the option to simply cover a short trip or long term stay. These policies have the added benefit of being underwritten by trusted companies that can promise coverage that is not only reliable, but also comprehensive.

Any USA tourists health insurance tourist is becoming increasingly important with the spread of regional diseases and cross-continental travel. The change in climate from one region to another can also put extended pressure on a traveler’s immune system which can lead to the need for common, yet expensive prescriptions.

Tourist insurance is also important for people that already have medical conditions or have small children. Both children and older individuals are prime targets for needing some type of medical help while visiting the United States because of their weaker immune system.

There are multiple reasons that USA tourists health insurance is a must when traveling to the United States. While the State Department has made it a prerequisite for acquiring certain visas, it is even more important when serving as a shield against the expensive health care system.

Study Abroad Student Health Insurance Primer

by Dan Miller on March 10, 2010

International Student Insurance is critical for students traveling abroad. Almost all health insurance plans from the student’s home country will not cover any medical costs that arise while studying overseas. Without this coverage, the expenses arising from diagnosis and medical treatment can become expensive very quickly. Here are some quick tips to help choose the type of coverage that you need.

The first fact to take into consideration when picking the best study abroad insurance is the duration of the stay.As a student stays out of the country for longer periods of time, they must ensure that their coverage is much more comprehensive than if it was only a short visit abroad. In fact, some countries are now mandating that international students must carry a certain level of insurance at all times.

Where a student chooses to travel to, it’s an important variable that can affect what type of international student medical insurance is the best match. Features like emergency evacuation and air ambulance become much more important when studying in lesser-developed countries and remote locations. If a student is traveling to a place that has comparatively high health care costs, the hospital coverage limit will need to reflect that.

It is also important to find out the extent to which your current home country insurance covers while studying abroad. Most plans in the United States and Canada will only cover an individual for either 30 or 60 days outside the country. Understanding the limitations of your current coverage is important when choosing your international student medical insurance.

Short study trips of 2 weeks or less may carry less risk but it is hard to completely rule out sicknesses or injuries. International student insurance should also have benefits for medical insurance. Small plans like this can easily be found through any travel agency.

Trips that will take between 2 weeks and 6 months will certainly call for comprehensive international student medical insurance. Students typically seek coverage between $100,000 and $1 million in expenses. You should also seek extra features based on your extra-curricular activities; some plans offer coverage for hazardous sports like skiing.

When a student extends their stay for more than six months, their international student health insurance will often function as their primary insurance. Almost every policy will be limited to a year, so students need to make sure that their policies can be easily renewed.

Study abroad insurance is composed of many options regarding coverage. Students should take advantage of having so many options and choose the plan that suits their needs. Options abound, so students need to do their research and make the choice that is right for them.

Worldwide Travel Insurance Policy

by Dan Miller on March 10, 2010

For those who travel overseas for extended periods of time, or for non-US citizens who spend time in the US, it’s important consider what type of health insurance is needed prior to traveling. Despite what many people believe, if you are traveling for at least six months at a time, you may not be covered by the same health insurance you have in your home country while traveling abroad.

Every traveler, whether they are traveling for business or pleasure, should consider purchasing an worldwide health insurance plan prior to leaving home. By protecting themselves and their family, they can save money and feel confident that they will receive good medical care no matter where they travel.

Long term worldwide health insurance is different from short term travel insurance plans in that it offers coverage for preventative care after a waiting period, in addition to the emergency care coverage typically found in other plans. While traveling overseas, you can utilize low-cost doctor visits and a high level of coverage for annual health screenings and medical care.

Plans that include worldwide travel insurance, like those offered by Global Citizen, typically offer a wide range of coverage, including deductibles that can range from $0 for Elite customers up to $25,000 for the lower-tier plans. Having the flexibility to select a deductible you are comfortable with is important to consider when you are planning for an extended stay overseas.

Unlike short term plans, international health insurance covers care received both outside the US and inside the US, for those who occasionally return home to visit during their overseas stay. Travelers won’t have any gaps in coverage if they travel between countries with this type of insurance plan.

International travel health insurance covers not only routine care, but also offers coverage for surgery, inpatient care, physical therapy and prescriptions. By having insurance that covers your medical needs outside of your home country, you can reduce your overall medical bills and save money during your trip.

While living abroad, it’s easy to protect your family with the affordable rates and numerous deductible options that worldwide health insurance plans offer. You don’t have to worry when traveling between your home country and your overseas home since you will be protected during your entire stay.

If you are preparing for an extended overseas stay, you need to consider purchasing a worldwide travel insurance plan. No matter where your destination is, with the right worldwide travel insurance plan, you can receive coverage for emergencies and receive high-quality medical care for the duration of your travels.

Why Caravan Insurance Is Important

by Timothy Simons Grimshaw on March 8, 2010

“For girls who go plump in the night” is the rather strange title of an album by 1970’s rock band Caravan, which is not the kind of thing you would expect an insurance man to know, even if he does actually own one, (a caravan I mean!) An insurance man in a caravan is probably not that unusual but an insurance man in a caravan listening to Caravan? Surely not!

I’m not sure what got me thinking about this subject; I think it was looking back at some photographs of last years Glastonbury festival and noticing, in one guise or another, just how many caravans were there. Obviously as an insurance man I was thinking about their insurance cover and whether or not the underwriters were actually aware just what they were being used for.

If memory serves me correctly there were caravans being lived in, housing first aid helpers, acting as tea shops (and I don’t mean mobile catering units, I mean caravans, proper ones with curtains) used as rest homes for tired musicians and even as the home of paid for showers.

In the camping areas there were caravans being used as shelter from the rain for the security staff, as meeting points for lost festival goers and as weekend homes for ageing rockers who either could no longer handle the rough nights of tent camping, or who just happened be fellow caravan fans.

Of course, another big user of caravans at music festivals are the musicians themselves. They usually have massive ones with an extra wheel at the front for steering and they use them for changing in, for hosting after-show parties in and doing whatever it is that rock-stars do.I dread to think. Saying that, I’m not sure if Caravan ever used one, that’d just be too good to be true wouldn’t it? Caravan in a caravan listening to their first album (which is called, you guessed it, “Caravan”). Or even better, maybe they went along in a convoy with their friends – a caravan of caravans including a caravan with Caravan in it, listening to Caravan!

But anyway, before I started ranting about rock-stars in caravan convoys I was thinking about whether or not these caravans had the correct insurance cover and lets be honest, the answer is probably not. If you are considering taking your caravan along to a festival this year then it is well worth thinking about getting proper insurance cover for it. Caravans can be damaged in all kinds of ways, especially at festivals where the fun loving, free-partying atmosphere can sometimes cloud people’s better judgement and out of control festival goers and crowds and the like can do a lot of damage to your caravan, whether it is intentional or not. It could simply slide off on its own if the mud gets too wet, they can flood, catch fire, get blown away, and almost anything you can think of can happen. Fortunately you can insure caravans against more or less anything that could happen to it, even if it gets rammed into by an uninsured caravan being used as a refreshment stand!

Coversure are one of the country’s leading providers of caravan insurance if you are thinking about taking your caravan anywhere where it would be even remotely at risk, you should think about looking into some caravan insurance just to be safe.

The Cause Of A Few Popular Automobile Malfunctions

by Terry Okaline on March 7, 2010

Just because you drive a car that does make you an expert on all the little things that go into making your car, well, a car! If you don’t know what everything does, a flashing light or a rattle can be quite disturbing. These are the top 5 things that you need to be aware of.

The first is a strange noise coming from your engine. Most undetermined noises that we hear in debris off the road that has become caught in the tire treads or possibly the clearance between the components in the valve train is too big. Take your garage to a car if there is a persistent knocking though.

Vibrations between components is the most common cause of squeaking brakes. There are 3 main options here; it could be vibrating between calipers and the pads, the calipers and the mounts or the pads and the rotors.

The light that tells you to check the engine always comes on at the most inopportune times. This is a reminder that has been built into your car that lights up if the computer thinks there may be a problem with your emission system. Nine times out of ten it is nothing serious, but if it red and your car may need looking at immediately.

Modern cars have in built computers which, when they think they detect a problem, cause a light to come on in the cabin. If you have never notice it before and it suddenly illuminates, it can be quite a shock! It is nothing to worry about most of the time but take it straight to a garage if it is a red light.

Another common problem is when the car starts pulling to the side while you are driving. This will probably be a simple of case of needing to be re-aligned. Watch out thought for it pulling to one side specifically.

The easiest way to tell if your shock absorbers or struts need looking at is if your normally smooth car becomes a very bumpy ride.

Take your car to a mechanic as soon as this problem becomes apparent. If you take it quickly is should be fixed fairly easily, if not you could be facing a hefty bill for new struts and shocks.

How To Find Some Of The Best Tourist Exchange Rates

by Roy Evans on March 6, 2010

If you are planning to take a trip out of your resident country, then money is usually your first concern. Not just the cost of the trip, itself, but the expenses you will incur while you are there. This generally entails knowing the currency of the country you are going to as well the tourist exchange rates.

It is very important to know how your money compares to the local currency of the area. This is vital information for properly being able to plan for your trip. It could ruin everything if you arrive somewhere and realize you did not set aside enough money for necessities. You need to know if your dollar is worth more or less than theirs.

There are a lot of places that offer this type of information. A lot of different news channels, both local and via cable, provide daily currency reports. Most times, you just have to turn on the morning news. Although, since it is not updated in real-time, the helpfulness of it can be limited.

Whatever bank you use may also provide such details for their customers. Finding out could be as simple as making a phone call or stopping by a branch to ask. A lot of them will even do a currency exchange for you, so you can be ready, in advance of your travels.

You should note, however, that neither one of these provides the optimum solution. The main reason for this is that currency rates generally change daily and can fluctuate throughout the day. You could end up arriving for your trip and discovering the information you were given is now out of date.

Thankfully, you do have several options that you can use to avoid finding yourself in such a situation. There are many Internet sites that offer real-time currency exchange information. They use automated processes to make sure they offer the most up-to-date information possible.

This makes it quite simple to have the most accurate information, anytime you need it. All it takes is a few seconds and you can find details for almost any country you can think of. A little but of time on a search engine is all you have to invest.

Shopping For Bargains On Home Furniture

by Patricia Alter on March 5, 2010

There are many ways these days that you can put together a stylish home. Don’t rush straight down to the nearest store just because of the it’s name; these will charge you top dollar and there are many other ways to get the same things but a lot cheaper.

So think a bit more out of the box as to where to get your things from. Check out garage sales and market places, consignment shops are a good place for bargain, and my personal favorite, Craigslist.

The used furniture for sale on the Craigslist site is generally good quality with very little wear and tear. You can save 50% or more on what you would pay at a store.

The bottom rung of furniture sales are garage sales. The weekend ones tend to be the best, and there are some bargains to be had if you look hard enough.

Yard sales can be a lot of fun if you go to them realistically and don’t set your expectations too high. On the plus side you get to actually see the stuff as opposed to just a picture and there are no charges to shipping as its instant purchase. There are dedicated yard sale addicts who plan their weekends around these sales.

Markets is general tend to sell goods of a lesser quality at low prices. There are many craftsmen, however, who take a regular stall and sell the furniture that they have made themselves. If you are lucky enough to find stalls like these then you are onto a winner as these tend to be very good quality but cost only a little more than the price of the materials.

If any of your neighbors advertise that they are having a yard sale, get yourself along there. There may be lots of stuff for sale as often when you hold a yard sales family get you to shift stuff for them too. The quality tends to be pretty good too as they are selling to friends and neighbors and don’t want to be talked about for selling junk.

These don’t come around often enough unfortunately, so grab the chance of a bargain whenever you can.
